Work has been interesting. I took a chance and there’s a possible good development in store as far as work goes. I won’t say more lest I jinx myself. School is going ok, I guess , but it’s hard to say yet. I may have to drop my 2 online classes since the bookstore doesn’t have the book I need for one class and because I’m already a bit behind in them and trying to find the time to actually do them. I am, of course, finding my history class fun, and I think psychology will show itself to be quite an interesting course.

Unfortunately, what all this means is that I’ve been neglecting this blog and not updating as often as I’d like. I’m going to try updating on a specific day of the week and see how that goes. Probably either Fridays or Sundays. It’s funny how the more things going on in your life, the more things you have to write about, the less often you have time to write. I’ve been neglecting a lot of things lately, really.

I think part of the crafty block I’ve had recently is because it’s been so long since I’ve made something just for me. I want to try to remedy that soon. Assuming I can find the time! I’m inspired with the swaps but once I’m finished with working on the projects for those I’m a bit blank for anything else to do. I need badly to add some things to the shop but that’s difficult to do when there’s nothing to add.

Speaking of craftiness and the shop and being busy – I am wanting to travel abroad this summer if at all possible. There’s a group that does a 4 week volunteering thing (technical term, right there) and one of the things you can do is go to Thailand and work with an elephant sanctuary. This would be, pretty much, a dream come true. The problem is that it’s waaaay more money than I can probably afford. Now, I’ll be able to pay off a couple of big bills when I get my student loan for this semester so I can make some headway into debt but I still don’t know that I could manage to do this. So, I’ve decided I’m going to try to get out of this craft rut and make things for the shop and put as much as I can from that into making this a reality. I don’t know that I’ll do it through this particular organization, though their package sounds amazing, but I want to do something similar through something. I don’t think I have the guts to do it on my own necessarily, I’d prefer to have some kind of group but I don’t know. Right now I’m going to focus on seeing how to afford it regardless of how I wind up going. It’s going to be several thousand dollars including airfare and such so it will be a big goal.

I’m also hoping the new development on the job front will help with this.

Wish me luck!

A few days ago I made a couple of purchases on Etsy. One of those purchases was from the shop UglyKitty where I bought an UglyKitty pinback button. The proceeds from which went to a great cause in honor of theUgly Kitty Pin world’s cutest ugly cat, Quasi. The money is donated to the Cool Cat’s Rescue Center where Quasi was adopted. (Don’t visit that page unless you’re prepared to find yourself wanting to adopt a dozen kitties.) Since October 2006, over $2000 has been raised by UglyKitty’s shop alone and it’s really no wonder because she has some fantastic stuff in stock.

Dragonfly Cosmetic CaseSpeaking of helping cat shelters, TackyHandmade donates 10% of shop sales to Town Cats of Ocean City in Maryland. It’s a no kill shelter for the feral cat community in the area.

Want to help out some dogs as well? Check out PocketfulofSunshine’s DT Collection which benefits thethinking of you Florida Boxer Rescue. 50% of the sales from this collection go to the volunteer based organization.

New FriendOr help out cats and dogs all at once by searching Ensorcelled Minds‘ shop or TJGems shop for the tag “charity.” Buy a card from Ensorcelled Minds and 15% of the proceeds go to the Southern Ontario Animal Rescue. It’s foster care and adoption charity for orphaned animals. Buy a charm or jewelry from TJGems and the full sale price goes to to Holly Hedge, which is a sanctuary for dogs & cats in the UK.

Untitled Elephant I’ve always been drawn to elephants. They were my favorite wild animal when I a kid, and they’re my favorite wild animal now. So one of the charities that’s important to me is The Elephant Sanctuary. It’s located here in Tennessee, just outside of Hohenwald. I posted a picture last time of a drawing I had done of an elephant. I’ve listed it in the shop with $5 of the proceeds going to the Sanctuary. Listing it got me wondering what other kinds of items people were selling to promote their favorite charities…

Phyllis Mufson of Personal Treasures donates all of the profits from Personal Treasures and its sister store Mufi Jewels to help support Charity OrRough Tourmaline NecklaceLabradorite and Hessonite Earringsphanage in Robertsport, Liberia. She sells some lovely items, like these pretty earrings and this amazing necklace. Her husband, Bill, served in the Peace Corps in Liberia and his work with the refugee and orphan children is benefited by her sales. You can find out more about their story at Phyllis’ blog.

Goods 4 Girls - Cloth Menstrual Pad Also donating towards good works in Africa is the shop Mellygirl2007. The organization Goods 4 Girls sends environmentally friendly reusable menstrual pads to schoolgirls in various countries in Africa. Often times these girls must miss school during their menstrual cycles due to inadequate menstrual supplies. At Mellygirl2007, you can buy cloth pads to be sent to these girls.

Returning to the subject of animal charities, Michele of mvegan5 on Etsy founded and co-leads EFA Artists Helping Animals which unfortunately appears to be closing soon.

Kissing Cow Cards

Ivory Mint Birdy PinHowever, Michelle donates 10% of all her store item sales to a Charity of the Month, always helping animals. And really, when you can get items as cute as this pin or these cards, it’s a win/win for everyone – human and animal.

I’ve found several more shops and items that I want to highlight but I’ll save those for another post. Keep in mind, though, that you can buy some really wonderful gifts for your friends and family while also giving to the world at large. It’s a great way of celebrating the true spirit of the season.

It’s very much an autumn day over here. Light drizzle, squirrels darting through the branches trying not to get wet, leaves falling, and an overcast haze coloring everything.

A good day for tea, and art, and hopefully some knitting later on.

My car needs work, I’m missing out on a day’s pay, and I’m behind in homework. No worries today though. Today is a sweater and hot chocolate day, a day to relax and try to breathe, and not rush around like I have been. I will do as I please at the pace I please and not fret over what’s still to be done.
